Momtold me stones about how when I was a little girl, I could sing before I could talk. She loved to tell how my playpen (婴儿圈栏) sat in the kitchen next to the radio and there was one song I particularly loved called "Ivory Tower".As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit them every week or two.The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad.But I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle (喧闹) of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced. Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deafening so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio.Music always comforted me,My heart skipped a beat."Moon River" was playing on the radio.I sat there, with a tear running down my cheek, as I listened to every familiar note. Then the radio announcer of this old station came on." The little headline said: BOXER RECEIVES LIFF SENTENCE.Frank Cleary, aged 26, professional boxer, was today found guilty of the murder of Albert Gumming, aged 32, laborer, last July. The jury (陪审团) reached its decision after only ten minutes, recommending the most severe punishment to the court. It was, said the Judge, a simple case.Cumming and Cleary had quarreled violently at the Harbour Hotel on July 23rd and police saw Cleary kicking at the head of the unconscious Gumming. When arrested, Cleary was drunk but clear-thinking.Cleary was sentenced to life imprisonment with hard labour.Asked if he had anything to say, Cleary answered, "Just don't tell my mother."" It happened over three years ago," Paddy said helplessly. No one answered him or moved, for no one knew what to do."Just don't tell my mother," said Fee numbly (麻木地)."And no one did! Oh,God' My poor, poor Frank!"Paddy wiped the tears from his face and said."Fee, pack your things. We'll go to see him."She half-rose before sinking back.her eyes in her small white face stared as if dead."I can't go," she said without a hint of pain, yet making everyone feel that the pain was there."It would kill him to see me.I know him so well―his pride, his ambition.Let him bear the shame alone, it's what he wants. We've got to help him keep his secret. What good will it do him to see us?"Paddy was still weeping, not for Frank, but for the life which had gone from Fee's face, for the dying in her eyes.Frank had always brought bitterness and misfortune, always stood between Fee and himself. He was the cause of her withdrawal from his heart and the hearts of his children.Every time it looked as if there might be happiness for Fee, Frank look it away. But Paddy's love for her was as deep and impossible to wipe out as hers was for Frank. So he said, "Well, Fee, we won't go.But we must make sure he is taken care of.How about if I write to Father Jones and ask him to look out for Frank?"There was no excitement in the eyes, but a faint pink stole into her cheeks." Lucien Lawrence's letter to Father Christmas, written after his schoolteacher father had been knifed to death outside his school gale, must have touched every heart.Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn't see the stars in the sky. When those whom we love depart from us, we cannot see the stare for a while. But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart.I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than 1 ever did when they were alive.I still live to please them and I'm still surprised by their reactions.I remember that when I became a professor,! was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn't wait to call my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all Mother said was "I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!" I haven't forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care.Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors (挑衅者), and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas'' It's a serious thought, one to give me pause.I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet " Deliver my soul from the sword(剑), and my darling from the power of the dog." Yet I know the death comes to us all,and sometimes comes suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will dietomorrow. We live on, I'm sure, in the lives of those we loved.and therefore we ought to have a carefor what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts tobe true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.56.According to the whole text we can see that the first paragraph ______.&A.puts forward the subject of the text&B.shows the author's pity on the kid&C.acts as an introduction to the discussion&D.makes a clear statement of the author's views57.In the second paragraph the author mainly wants to explain to us ______.&A.how much he misses his parents now&B.why his parents often appear in his dream&C.when Lucien will get over all his sadness&D.how proud he was when he succeeded in life58.What feeling did the author's mother express in her reply?&A.Proud.& &B.Happy.&&&&&& &C.Disappointed.& &D.Worried59.In the author's opinion, the value of a person's life is ______.&A.to leave behind a precious memory to the people related&B.to have a high sense of duty to the whole society&C.to care what others will remember and treasure&D.to share happiness and sadness with his family60.What does the writer mean by the sentence taken from an old poem?&A.Call on criminals and murderers to lay down their guns.&B.Advise parents stay with their children safely at home.&C.Spend every day meaningfully in memory of the death.&D.Try to keep violence and murder far away from society. 61.David believes people shouldn't smoke in public places as it harms others.62.Joe insists that smokers should put the cigarette ends where they should go.63.Sophie holds that this question should call for a further argument.64.Michael thinks cigarette taxes should be raised for free healthcare for nonsmokers.65.Bauer thinks that victims of second - hand smoking should leave smoking areas to avoid harm.AThe stupid thing is, I often see people smoking and then they throw the cigarette ends away from them when they have finished, not even stopping them but it just seems like once they have finished, they don't want it near them, perhaps they ought to have to carry their own ash trays in their pockets.BIn many places, there are no non - smoking bars or restaurants.Unless people refuse to go out with friends who smoke, they cannot avoid passive smoking.Society accepts that adults can decide to harm themselves.so long as they do not harm others. This is why the suggestion is not arguing that people should be banned from smoking in private.Passive smokers do choose to breathe in other people's smoke. If they do not want to smoke passively, they do not need to go to places where smoking is allowed. There is therefore no reason to prevent smoking in public.CI'm only for smoking because not only do nice people and many friends and family of mine smoke, but this debate needs someone to take the side of the smoker.Otherwise we're just picking on a set of people. The only comment so far for smoking has been that clever one about how they pay for it.Smoking has its good points, whether it is giving job opportunities to millions of people, or getting extra breaks at work.Anyway, I do have a lot to say against smoking too, but again, debate.DWhat I care about is whether people can get free healthcare. Some people deliberately take dangerous toxins into their bodies because they're "addicted" while there are other people like my uncle who died of lung cancer and he never smoked in his life.It makes you wonder why cigarettes are so cheap.Surely all the taxes from cigarettes ought to go to help people who don't smoke.Perhaps we ought to sort things out.ECompletely against it.I work in a bar and 1 get so sick of coming home smelling like a bonfire. And if that isn't enough, I'm probably going to get lung cancer from those idiots that decide to excite themselves. However,! do understand that for some older smokers it is a habit because they may have been smoking long before they knew it was bad for them.I do think there's no excuse for my generation to do it though and if they want to die, then go to do it in your own home.FPhil and I had a good argument today in the pub.He made the comment, "If he wants to smoke and kill himself, he can!", about which I said "You want to get on your motorbike and risk death, fine", which are basically the same thing. He made the point that he's a good driver and it's not his fault if he gets hurt, but at the end of the day, his fault or not, he knows he could get killed, and he's still taking the risk of being on a bike.I think it's a sick thing to say, being honest! If people want to put something in their mouth and blow on it, they should be allowed without having things like that being said ! It's a free country!&第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共50分)
