In one of the most harrowing true stories of World War II, three US Navy airmen crash land their torpedo bomber in the South Pacific and find themselves on a tiny life raft, surrounded by open ocean. No food. No water. No hope of rescue. Against incredible odds, these three virtual strangers must survive storms, sharks, starvation – and each other – as they try to sail more than a thousand miles to safety.
In a busy season of WW2 films including FURY, UNBROKEN, and THE IMITATION GAME, AGAINST THE SUN stands out because of the extraordinary efforts of its dedicated cast and crew.
About the Cast
Garret Dillahunt (Harold Dixon)
It is rare to find an actor who is both a leading man and character actor who can morph effortlessly from role to role. Garret Dillahunt possesses a resume that displays an impressive diversity.
Born in California and raised in Washington, Dillahunt studied journalism at the University of Washington and went on to earn his M.F.A. through New York University’s renowned graduate acting program.
Garret has just finished his final season of FOX’s half hour comedy series “Raising Hope.” During the show’s five season run, he stayed busy working continuously during his hiatuses on feature films such as 12 YEARS A SLAVE, which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the Courteney Cox-directed JUST BEFORE I GO, and the soon to be released AGAINST THE SUN.
Garret will soon be seen in the upcoming Amazon series “Hand of God,” opposite Ron Pearlman (of “Sons of Anarchy” and HELLBOY fame) and in the F/X series “Justified” with Timothy Olyphant.
Other recent credits include ANY DAY NOW opposite Alan Cumming and directed by Travis Fine which won Best Feature at last year’s Out Film Festival. He also appeared in LOOPER, the intriguing sci fi action adventure with Emily Blunt, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Bruce Willis, additionally he starred in and received a Genie nomination as the title character, OLIVER SHERMAN, in Ryan Redford’s directorial debut opposite Molly Parker and Donal Logue. Some of his other credits include the independent feature AMIGO, with Chris Cooper and directed by John Sayles and the critically acclaimed WINTER’S BONE, which earned him and the rest of the cast Best Ensemble at the Gotham Awards.
His additional film credits include THE ROAD, with Viggo Mortensen and Charlize T Wes Craven’s THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT; THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES BY THE COWARD ROBERT FORD; and the Coen Brothers Oscar-winning drama NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN, opposite Tommy Lee Jones. Dillahunt earned a SAG award for Best Ensemble for the latter.
The multi-faceted actor is probably best known for his work on the critically acclaimed HBO series “Deadwood,” in which he portrayed two entirely different characters: the assassin “Jack McCall” and the complex and deadly “Francis Wolcott.” After recognizing his protean talent in his first incarnation, executive producer/writer David Milch created a second character for him.
Additional television credits include “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “John From Cincinnati,” “The Book of Daniel,” “ER,” “The 4400,” “Damages,” “Life,” “Lie to Me,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Criminal Minds,” “Burn Notice,” “White Collar”,
“Alphas” and “Memphis Beat”.
He boasts an outstanding theatrical resume and has performed extensively on and off Broadway and at such respected theater companies as Steppenwolf, ACT San Francisco, the Seattle Repertory Theatre, Huntington Theatre Company, Williamstown Theatre Festival and the Berkshire Theatre Festival.
Dillahunt resides in Los Angeles and New York.

Since working on both blockbuster franchises, Tom has worked in a variety of roles that show him in a totally different light.
First Tom shot the British miniseries LABYRINTH for Ridley and Tony Scott alongside John Hurt, Sebastian Stan and Jessica Brown-Findlay which was released last year as a mini-series for The CW.
He followed that with a lead role in IN SECRET (directed by Charlie Stratton) opposite Jessica Lange, Elizabeth Olsen and Oscar Isaac which premiered last year at the Toronto Film Festival. DNA synthesis in the trachea of aging mice by light and electron microscopic radioautography
Sun, L.; Gao, F.; Jin, C.; Nagata, T., 1997: DNA synthesis in the trachea of aging mice by light and electron microscopic radioautography. Acta Histochemica et Cytochemica 30(2): 211-220
The present study was undertaken to elucidate the age-related changes of DNA synthesis and morphology of tracheal cells in aging mice by light and electron microscopic radioautography. The tracheae of 8 groups of mice from fetal day 18 to 2 years after birth were labeled with 3H-thymidine in vitro. The results demonstrated that the DNA syntheses and morphology of tracheal cells in aging mice changed due to aging. The radioautographic examinations revealed that the DNA syntheses of the nonciliated and basal cells reached their maxima on fetal day 18, then fell from postnatal 3 days onwards. The activity of DNA synthesis of ciliated cell was very low in the fetal stage. Ciliated cells could not synthesize DNA and proliferate in the postnatal stage, which were derived by the division and transformation of basal cells. On the other hand, the DNA synthesis of chondrocytes was the highest on embryonic day 18, and rapidly declined on postnatal day 3. The chondrocytes lost the ability of synthesizing DNA at 2 months after birth. The DNA syntheses of other cells (including fibroblasts, smooth muscle and glandular cells) were the highest on fetal day 18 and fell markedly on the third day after birth. They increased again at 1 week, then decreased progressively due to aging.
