Click to watch video, experience SNIEC new tagline - EXPERIENCE & EXCELLENCE
The Shanghai New Internation&al Expo Center (SNIEC) has vowed to increase its quality and service levels in coming years amid the increasingly intensified market environment.
Located in Shanghai&s Pudong New Area, SNIEC was the first Sino-foreign joint-ven&ture exhibition center in China. It was estab&lished in 2001 by the German Exposition Cor&poration International GmbH and the Shang&hai Lujiazui Exhibition Development Co Ltd.
SNIEC offers 17 column-free, ground-lev&el exhibition halls, covering 200,000 square meters of indoor space and 100,000 sq m of outdoor space. It has been part of the explo&sive growth of China&s convention and exhibi&tion economy over the past decade and has developed into one of most successful exhibi&tion centers in the country. Each year, close to 100 world-class exhibitions are held at SNIEC, attracting more than 4 million visitors.
&Despite the weak international and Chi&nese economy, 2016 was another successful year for SNIEC,& said Michael Kruppe, gen&eral manager of SNIEC.
&The sales growth of SNIEC in 2016 increased more than 10 percent from the year before, a much higher growth rate than the industry average.Additionally, the venue is almost sold out for the next 3 to 5 years.&
Kruppe revealed that SNIEC has started to focus more on international and hi-tech shows.
&We are very active in other international markets like the United States where we have successfully contracted three new shows. More shows from, including IAAPA, NAB, CES and World of Concrete are also our cli&ents,& he said.
SNIEC is also looking to increase the types of shows it hosts, added Kruppe. In addition to the classic business-to-business events that it is usually home to, SNIEC has also begun hosting business-to-consumer events such as gala dinners, product launches and even tele&vision shows like the Asian Cup Competitions for pet dogs in November. Kruppe said that SNIEC is also in the midst of discussions about events like moto-cross shows, food festivals and sport competitions.
In addition, SNIEC may be expanding its space to better host new exhibitions and shows.
&Because of the limited space during peak seasons, many customers have urged SNIEC to expand. Some high-tech shows also require more space to hold conferences so this is some&thing we are working on,& he said.
Kruppe stated that SNIEC will not relocate and will remain on Longyang Road for the fore&seeable future. According to Kruppe, SNIEC will be building more visitor-friendly amenities and creating a new platform for family enter&tainment activities.
According to the Pudong government, the total exhibition area in the district measures about 7.92 million square meters, accounting for 53.6 percent of the city&s total, while the direct and indirect income of the exhibition industry in Pudong was 9.6 billion yuan and 79.2 billion yuan respectively.
In addition, the exhibition industry had helped consumption levels in related sectors, such as food and beverage, accommodation, sightseeing, shopping and cultural entertain&ment, reach 46.9 billion yuan.
Improving service
Last year, SNIEC unveiled its new logo, com&bining the brand&s name with two triangles repre&senting the shape of the venue. As SNIEC prides itself as a platform for fostering the exchange of knowledge, commerce and cultures, the combi&nation of triangles expresses the spirit of coop&eration, sharing and innovation. Meanwhile, red and grey symbolize vitality and wisdom. The new tagline, &Experience & Excellence& also debuted during the new logo unveiling.
SNIEC has established a service quality improvement working team called the Perfor&mance Improvement Program (PIP).Comprised of members from different departments of the venue. The major role of the PIP is to strength&en communication with customers and to lis&ten to customers& feedback, allowing SNIEC to continuously improve its services. PIP has also set up a service evaluation system, which cov&ers major areas and links in the service system.
While the commercial and service elements are an important part of SNIEC&s operations, the center has also been striving to boost its safety and security measures. Last year, SNIEC opened a new safety department to ensure the complex will be even safer than before.
& Responsiveness to customers is our top priority. At last November&s UFI Congress in Shanghai, one of the top global organizers announced that our dedication to customer service is obvious, and that they are very hap&py to see SNIEC deliver on it&s promises,& Krup&pe said.
&International shows need top quality and top service. We at SNIEC understand this and give them what they need,& he said.
A New Logo for a New Era: Introducing SNIEC 2.0
SNIEC launches a new brand and a new look
The unveiling of new logo and brand for the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) was held at Shanghai Grand Ballroom, Kerry Hotel Pudong, on November 20, 2015. Over 200 guests from government and industry were on hand helping SNIEC celebrate a new era.
The new logo combines the world famous SNIEC name along with two triangles representing the shape of the venue. SNIEC provides a platform to foster the exchange of knowledge, commerce, and cultures. The dynamic combination of triangles expresses the spirit of cooperation, sharing, and innovation. Lastly, the red and grey colors symbolize vitality and wisdom.
The new tagline, &EXPERIENCE & EXCELLENCE& also debuted during the special occasion.
SNIEC is jointly owned by German Exposition Corp., a joint subsidiary of Deutsche Messe AG, Messe Duesseldorf GmbH, and Messe Muenchen GmbH, and the Shanghai Lujiazui Exhibition Development Co., Ltd.
On November 4, 1999, former German Chancellor Schroeder, and former Shanghai Deputy Mayors Zhou Yupeng and Jiang Yiren attended the foundation-laying ceremony to kick off the construction of SNIEC. Since then, the exhibition industry venue in the Pudong has become the place in Shanghai to hold exhibitions.
Beginning with its opening on November 2, 2001, the SNIEC project developed from the initial 4 halls over twelve expansion phases into 17 column-free, ground-level exhibition halls, covering 200,000 sqm of indoor space and 100,000 sqm of outdoor space. SNIEC has 3 entrance halls, 20 loading bays, 2 multilayer parking garages and 5 small outdoor parking lots, providing 4730 parking spaces. The functional design of SNIEC makes it unique amongst all of the other exhibition centers in China.
Boasting outstanding surrounding commercial facilities, plentiful hotels and easy-access transport links, SNIEC is China&s most successful exhibition center, hosting more than 100 events and attracting close to 5 million visitors annually.
SNIEC 2.0 continues the venue&s commitment to customer service and innovation. Earlier this year, SNIEC implemented a series of upgrades which included the construction of an improved WIFI system, development of WIFI-related application, construction of additional transformers, upgraded food and beverage facilities, establishing a service evaluation system, and refining&its customer satisfaction surveys.
These measures further the trust and confidence of leading international and domestic organizers to continue to use SNIEC to host their exhibitions, exemplifying &Experience & Excellence&.
Most importantly, SNIEC will continue to maintain its role as a landlord, meaning that it will not launch proprietary shows, nor compete with its customers. Organizers who bring their shows to SNIEC now and in the future know SNIEC will continue to actively protect their exhibitions.
The Pudong exhibition service standards and MICE-related app platform were released by Shanghai Pudong Commission of Commerce who held the press conference on July 15, 2015 at SNIEC. Jian Danian, Deputy Director of Pudong, attended this conference and made an address.
In this conference, Mr. Michael Kruppe, General Manager of SNIEC, introduced the exhibition-related service standardization pilot project which takes SNIEC as a place where a service standardization experiment was implemented in past 2 years. Currently, SNIEC has developed a comprehensive service standardization system under the guidance of the Shanghai Quality Bureau and Pudong Quality Bureau. Its brand concept, &EXPERIENCE & EXCELLENCE has been recognized by the industry fully.
Also the cooperation agreement about developing MICE-related app platform has been signed to promote the concept of smart exhibitions among Shanghai Pudong Commission of Commerce, China Mobile Corporation, Shanghai Co, Shanghai Wisdomuni Info Technology Co and SNIEC on this special occasion. This app is the first on-line platform related to MICE service innovation application, and will incorporate services related to convention, exhibition, tourism and commerce. More smart functions will be added in coming years.
In the past years, the Pudong Government made great efforts in developing the exhibition industry. Since the opening of Pudong, the exhibition industry in Pudong has made a phenomenal development and lead Chinese exhibition industry to a new position. In 2014, there are total 220 shows held in Pudong, including 185 international shows. The sold space is up to 8,120,000sqm, attracting more than 120,000 exhibitors and 6,450,000 visitors. Pudong is attracting more and more organizers and guests from all over the world with its unique advantages and leading services.
Jian Danian, Deputy Director of Pudong, said &currently Pudong is on the road to drive the development of modern service industry. With a further expansion of Pudong free trade zone, driving the innovation of convention & exhibition industry has play an important role in upgrading Pudong&s service industry. In future, we will keep on-going improvement in Pudong exhibition industry based on the concept of internationality and profession, and enhance the interaction between the areas like convention, exhibition, tourism, commerce and culture on the other side&.

SNIEC vowed to improve work safety standards to ensure a better environment for its stakeholders. As part of the improvements, SNIEC launched a work safety video in early June to provide workers with instructions on work site safety and hazard prevention.
The move was in response to the nation&s annual &safety work month& in June. The cartoon video presented common exhibition construction accidents, including construction site falls, electrical accidents and crane and vehicle accidents. In the video, SNIEC invited experts to demonstrate how to properly handle equipment and machines to avoid accidents.
&It (the video) is not commonly seen in the exhibition industry. It shows that the management team considers work site safety as a very important part of the centre&s daily operation,& said an industry expert.
&It is an educational, precautionary and impressive onsite work safety video. I think the video gives guidance to clarify working procedures in construction,& said Michael Kruppe, general manager of SNIEC. &It will generate positive effects in accident and hazard prevention at SNIEC.&
&After watching the video, workers will have more knowledge about onsite work standards. They know their dangerous actions will bring very serious outcomes,& said a manager from an exhibition construction company in Shanghai.&The video is very useful for both construction companies and workers.&
OPPORTUNITIES AND PROBLEMS
Since the 1990s, China&s convention and exhibition industry has rapidy developed at a double-digit growth rate along with economic globalization and China&s booming economy. Data from the Ministry of Commerce shows that 7,319 exhibitions and expos of various types were held in China in 2013, an increase of about 63 percent from 2008. The nation&s total exhibition area has also doubled from that in 2008, reaching 93.9 million square meters in 2013.
The growing exhibition market has created business opportunities for exhibition booth construction companies. In the past, many unqualified businesses rushed into the booth construction sector and caused problems. Industry insiders said many unprofessional companies do not apply strict rules for onsite work safety, onsite material management and staff management, which led to many accidents across the country.
On June 10, a booth at the Guangzhou Lighting Exhibition collapsed. Although there were no injuries reported in this case, the collapsed booth affected neighboring exhibitors& plans. On June 5, a booth at the 12th China Wuhan International Aftermarket Expo 2015 collapsed and caused injuries.
Kruppe said he believes that work safety is closely related to different parties and it is a key factor that affects the sustainable development of the industry. &The working environment in the exhibition centre is labor intensive and often involves short construction periods, which means it is very easy to have an accident. Any administrator or individual&s negligence could cause an accident,& Kruppe said.
In the past few years, SNIEC has committed itself to building a safe working environment and urged construction companies to follow its instructions and advice.
OTHER MEASURES
The centre also partnered with local administrative departments to strengthen work site safety management and apply strict assessment procedures to eliminate potential risks.
For instance, it strengthened its onsite safety inspection mechanism and expanded its inspection team. Companies are now required to stop construction and fix any problems if accident risks arise. &During the move-in and move-out period, SNIEC will arrange an inspection team with more than 30 security staff to patrol the exhibition venue. We will stop dangerous activities and require companies to correct them immediately,& said a manager surnamed Tang from SNIEC.
In addition to reminding workers to pay attention to safety, the centre also hands out safety standards booklets to urge companies to pay more attention to onsite safety management. &SNIEC is paying much more attention to work site safety and spares no efforts to promote the awareness of the importance of work safety.
SNIEC is also proactive in pushing safety administration standards for the exhibition industry,& said a construction business manger. &Workers have to wear safety belts and safety helmets before entering the working site. They will be cautious when moving up and down the scaffolding,& he added.
Kruppe said during the past decade, SNIEC has improved onsite work safety management and maintained control over the safety hazard prevention system. &Although everything is within expectations, and so far so good, we should be cautious in safety management.
We will have stricter evaluation mechanisms to maintain our good performance in the future,& he said. &We are responsible for providing a safe environment to our staff and clients. We will continue to impose strict rules for onsite work safety management to maintain sustainable development of China&s exhibition industry,& Kruppe said.
