It wasn't until after World War II that innerspring mattresses caught on and found their ways into American bedrooms and by the 1950s, mattress factories were busy churning out king and queen beds. King-size beds -- dubbed Eastern kings -- are wider and shorter than their Western cousins, the California king.
California-king beds, also called Western kings, at one time were options only for the rich and elite. First manufactured by a furniture company based in Los Angeles, these oversize king beds were custom made beginning in the 1960s for tall actors, celebrities and athletes. The California king measures 72 inches wide but has a length of 84 inches compared to the king-size bed at 76 inches wide and 80 inches long. Sheets for the California king, the rarer bed of the two, often cost more than sheets for a standard-size king bed.
By the 1970s and 1980s, U.S. manufacturers began mass producing the California and standard king beds, as increased demand heated up for these sumptuously large mattresses and box springs. European manufacturers started making their own versions of these oversize beds to compete with American-made brands. The European-king bed is different still, with its super king measuring 72 inches wide by 78 inches long. Its Eastern-king bed matches the dimensions of the American-made standard king.
The California king is the better choice for people who are tall and have a bedroom at least 12-by-13-feet, which leaves a little more than 2 feet on either side of the bed and a bit more than 5 feet at its end, including at least 6 inches around the bed for its frame. The minimum requirement for a standard king is a slightly wider room at 12-by-12-feet long to accommodate the bed and frame and leaving 2 feet around the frame for walking space. But both of these room sizes don't leave much space for anything else in the room. An ideal room size for either bed is at least 12 to 16 feet wide and 16 to 18 feet long, which leaves plenty of space for dressers.
The Eastern or standard king bed also comes in another option: the split king bed, which is a bed divided down the middle. The split king gains 2 inches of width because of the split, which makes the bed more maneuverable. Some stores sell king beds that don't fit any of these measurements, which may be a frustrating experience for consumers once they try to fit sheets to the bed. The grand-king bed measures 80 inches wide by 98 inches long, which currently is the biggest king bed available.
