Our Verdict
We can't help but feel disappointed with the lack of performance progress the FX-8150 represents. It's not a bad chip, but we wanted more.
Product features
Processor Core : Octa-core (8 Core)
Great overclocking
Serious multi-threading chops for less than &200
Only slightly faster at stock than 1100T
Struggles against 2500K
And is pricier

AMD FX-8150 - Overview
We've waited a long time for AMD to release a brand new processor architecture, but finally the AMD FX-8150 has arrived. This first chip is the vanguard of the somewhat tardy Bulldozer technology and is this top-of-the-line AMD FX chip, code-named Zambezi. This is the full-fat, eight-core AMD super-chip running at a not inconsiderable 3.6GHz straight out the box.The FX moniker isn't a new one for AMD chips. The last time we saw it used for its high-end parts was in the 90nm Athlon 64 FX-74 in late 2006. It's been reborn this year to cover the first in what AMD hopes will be a long line of Bulldozer-based CPUs.The AMD FX CPUs represent the chip maker's first real new architecture since the exciting times of the first Athlon back in 2003. And it is very muc AMD has started from scratch with the design of the Bulldozer modules, taking a very different approach to what makes up a CPU core than anyone else. We'll explore the depths of that architectural change later, but the real key is the use of that word 'module'. Each of these modules holds the essential makeup of a standard dual-core processor, sharing certain non-timing sensitive parts. The AMD FX-8150 has four of these Bulldozer modules and AMD claims that makes it the world's first eight-core desktop chip. It's tough to ignore the sickly sweet scent of fudge here, though this hardware-based solution ought be a lot more effective than Intel's mostly software-oriented HyperThreading. The Bulldozer module represents the future of AMD processors going forward.
Speaking with Bernard Seite, an AMD Technical Advisor, last month he told us that the Bulldozer modules are likely to last as the basis for its CPU range for the next 5-7 years. At the moment we've only seen the roadmap for the next couple of years, with the Piledriver update coming next year, Steamroller coming in 2013 and Excavator in 2014. Yes, we know it sounds like a joke, but AMD's latest roadmap really does read like the Urban Dictionary Karma Sutra. But hopes are still high for these new AMD FX processors, especially after it managed to snag the Guiness World Record for highest CPU clockspeed in September. We saw this top CPU here running at well over 8GHz.That is impressive, but realistically it's just numbers. The world record didn't demand the machine to actually run any applications, it just needed to boot into Windows and report it's clockspeed. It also didn't need to be running all its cores. The world record was actually only broken by a single Bulldozer module in operation and under serious liquid helium cooling too.The precedent is there though and means the AMD FX-8150 ought to be one hell of an overclocker's chip. What that will mean in real-world applications though we'll soon see.So how does the new AMD FX CPU stack up then? Can it give Intel's Sandy Bridge a run for its money and can it make AMD a performance chip manufacturer once more?

Historical price chart
The chart below shows official prices of AMD FX-6100, FX-6200 and FX-6300 processors:
Q: Is it possible to unlock disabled cores on the AMD FX-6200 CPU?
A: No. This processor does have 2 disabled cores, but there is no way to unlock them.
Q: My processor is running 55C under load. Is this normal?
A: Safe CPU temperatures are 60 degrees Celsius and below. It may
still run fine with CPU temperatures, exceeding 60C threshold by a
few degrees. Running the FX-6200 close to 70 degrees and higher is not
recommended.
Q: Is it possible to upgrade my FX-6200 microprocessor?
A: Probably yes. Processor compatibility is determined by your motherboard. Please check
website for CPU support list for your board.

AMD to drop prices, launch FX-4130 CPU on August 27
Aug 24, 2012: AMD today updated A-Series, FX-Series and Phenom II pricing pages,
lowering prices on full range of "Llano" APUs, and high performance
K10 and "Bulldozer" CPUs. The pages shows effective date August
27, which suggests that the price drops will happen next Monday.
Overall, the prices were cut by 1% - 23%.
AMD cuts prices on A-Series APUs and FX CPUs
Apr 27, 2012: A few days after announcement of Intel's Ivy Bridge
micro-architecture, many news sites reported
retailers slashed prices of FX-8150 processors by 15% - 20%, and
suggested that AMD may have dropped the prices of other processors as
well. Today AMD published new pricelist, confirming price drop for the
FX-8150 model. The company also cut prices of six- and quad-core
FX-Series chips, and for all microprocessors from A-Series.
Prices of AMD FX-4170 and FX-6200 processors
Mar 08, 2012: Less than two weeks ago AMD added FX-4170 and FX-6200 unlocked
microprocessors to FX-Series line-up without releasing their pricing.
FX chips had significantly higher (about 15%) stock clock speeds
compared to older FX-4170 and FX-6100 models, therefore the new
processors expected to be more expensive. Earlier this week AMD
added FX-Series 4170 and 6200 CPUs to official price list, confirming
those expectations.
AMD releases FX-4170 and FX-6200 CPUs
Feb 28, 2012: Yesterday AMD released two FX-Series "unlocked" microprocessors,
based on Buldozer micro-architecture. New CPUs are FX-4170 and
FX-6200. Details of these SKUs were known for quite some time.
AMD FX-4170 was part of original Bulldozer announcement in October of last
year. FX-6200 emerged in CPU specifications database on AMD website
last December, which we mistakenly interpreted as a sign of
launched product.
AMD's CPU and APU Line-Up thru Q3 2012
Feb 12, 2012: A slide has been leaked by Donanimhaber that shows AMDs product line-up for the next 2 quarters in the APU and CPU markets. The slide shows that we will be seeing Trinity A8- and A10-series in Q2, replacing Llano A8 in the high end APU sector. At the same time, Brazos 2.0 will replace Brazos in the mobile range. The rest of the Trinity range will be available in Q3, along with Vishera, the replacement for Zambezi in the performance sector.
Pre-order prices for upcoming AMD FX CPUs
Feb 01, 2012: Last Sunday Intel listed three new Core i5 desktop microprocessors
in company's official pricelist. Another desktop Core i7 model will be
launched in two weeks. It seems that AMD also prepares to refresh
their FX line of desktop processors, targeted at computer enthusiasts.
We recently spotted available for pre-order unreleased FX-4170 and FX-6200 CPUs. Also, AMD is going to offer in US a variation of FX-8150
model with liquid cooling.
Details of FX-6200 CPU emerge on AMD website
Dec 31, 2011: Earlier this month Donanim Haber
specifications, release dates and prices of unlocked FX-6200, as well as A-Series A6-3670K and A8-3870K microprocessors. A-Series APUs were
announced on December 20, and they surfaced in stores a week later.
FX-6200 SKU, which was supposed to be released on December 26, is not
yet available in stores. However, as was already reported by many hardware news sites,
FX-6200 specifications already appeared on AMD website.
