Diatoms are unicellular algae enclosed in intricate bio-silicified walls with repetitive nanostructures in a size range which makes them potentially relevant for a broad spectrum of industrial applications. How to optimize the nano-scale structures of the frustule for utilization of diatoms in nanotechnology is one of the technological challenges for these applications. Light is one of the most important abiotic factors for algal photosynthetic growth, and the frustule may play an important role in mediating light for these biological functions, as well as being central for its nano-technological applications. In this study, we tested the influence of light quality on the nanostructure of the frustule of Coscinodiscus granii and compared this to growth rate response. The results showed that colored light (red, yellow, green and blue) at 300 umol photons m-2·s-1 resulted in a statistically significant change in nanostructure compared to white light. Green light at 100 umol photon m-2·s-1 led to a significant decrease in mean frustule diameter and mean foramen diameter. Numerical simulations confirmed that the morphological changes obtained were sufficient to induce clear differences in the photonics properties of the frustule. The wavelength had no effect on the growth rate at high light intensity (300 umol photons m-2·s-1). However, at 100 umol photons m-2·s-1, yellow, red-orange and green light resulted in significantly lower maximum growth rates than the other wavelengths. The menu changes daily but usually offers beans, potato, chorizo, eggs with chaya, chicken, and barbacoa. If you get your meal to stay, ask the Gael Garcia look-alike behind the juice press for a glass of tangy, fresh-squeezed OJ. Go early—they close up shop once all sold out.

A piece of history at Las Ruinas [The Ruins] Where Tulum gets its namesake. The famous ruins are situated along the coastline to form a protective wall, or tulum in Mayan. Go early in the day or late in the evening to avoid the harsh sun and crowds. Bring your bathing suit—you can swim beneath the ruins for a truly magical afternoon. Go with a guide, or at your own pace. When you're done, walk over to Playa Pescadores for fresh ceviche and a beer.

at Maya Tulum Retreat & Resort When in Rome. Don't miss the chance to experience a traditional Aztec purification ceremony called temazcal lead by a shaman. Inside a small sweat lodge, an herbal tea made splashed over heated volcanic produces a powerful fragrant steam. A series of four guided meditations accompanied by chanting and ancient music lead you to utter bliss. Ceremony takes about three hours, about half inside the sweat lodge. Ask for a private ceremony for a more intimate experience.
Full Moon Party at
One Saturday a month, this popular beachfront hotel and restaurant celebrates the coming of the full moon with an all-night dance party. Multiple bars and stadium-style flooring overlooking the beach lends plenty of room for the whole town to attend. If you miss the full moon, no worries—every saturday is a dance party. $300 pesos to get in after about 10pm.

Parayso Just across from JOSA you'll find a stretch of beach known as Parayso. A favorite for its soft sand, gentle waves, and food and drink options. Eat up tacos and a coco frio at Eufemia Taqueria.
PescadoresThis small beach area is actually leased from local fishermen, who embark in the morning to provide local restaurants with the catch of the day. Except for when there are parties around the pirate ship in front of Villas Pescadores hotel, this area is easy-going and quiet.
XcacelOur little secret. Actually a turtle reserve located about 15 minutes north of Tulum pueblo, this tucked-away beach features some of the most pristine and sparkling waters in the Yucatan. There is also a small but pretty cenote nearby—take a refreshing dip to wash the salt off. $20 peso entrance fee. Closes at 5pm. Bring snacks and water.

If you do not rent a car, the best way to get around is either taxi or bike, as parking is limited and traffic can get tight. Multiple locations rent bikes per day or week, all around $12 USD/day. Taxis run from $30 to $150 pesos per trip, depending on where you are going and the time of day.
