This slender stemmed plant flourishes in shady sites or open areas and will invade by vigorous growth. The lavender, white, or blue flowering buds are often confused with big leaf periwinkle. The best way to get rid of the invader is by pulling, digging, and then raking it up. You should make sure to remove the parts of the invader underground or use a herbicide. However, you should be persistent and expect a fight.With no claws or arms, common ivy or English ivy is notorious for its amazing ability to climb trees. This invader is a nightmare and will spread out of control on the floor of your landscape. The evergreen perennial vine will attach to practically anything and affix itself like glue. The seeds, berries, and leaves of this plant are toxic and can make a human sick. English ivy is notorious for moving in and taking over. If you are experiencing an invasion you can pull up the vines by hand or with a rake from the floor of your landscape. You can also use a systemic herbicide to attempt to try to stop the invasion dead in its tracks.The gorgeous blossoms are full of nectar and will attract the melodious humming bird to your yard. However, you should never let your fascination with hummingbirds suggest an invitation to the trumpet creeper. This terribly intrusive plant doesn't just flourish on the floor, but it goes underground. The leaves and flowers will irritate your skin and destroy and displace other planted flowers in your yard. The worst part of this bully weed is getting rid of it. With a large root system, you must dig up the entire root. If you fail to leave a small portion it will come back. Full strength Round Up in multiple applications will eventually kill uninvited guest to your landscape. However you decide to try to get rid of it, you must be diligent, persistent, and watchful of the vine when resurfaces.It is not as fast as a speeding bullet, but the intrusive lily of the valley is close to unstoppable. Depending on where you live, the plant is probably considered an invader. Traditionally found in the southern Appalachian Mountains, it has a sweet smell, pretty blossoms, and happens to be highly poisonous. The toxicity of this fast spreading plant causes vomiting, abdominal pain, and will even slow a human's heart rate down. The lily of the valley does produce red berries, which may be attractive to small children. Its not just the berries, every part of this plant is toxic. Ironically, the plant is very expensive and popular at weddings. To keep lily from taking your garden to her valley, you must kill the root. Usually, its easier said than done, but one way to get lily out of your garden is by the root.These intruders wait in the darkness or light for the best moment pounce. When the intruder comes, it comes with sheer ferocity. Invasive ground cover is an intruder and a hazard to your landscape or garden. These weeds will take over because invading is literally in its name. These weeds grow and expand at an alarming rate and will destroy gardens. Worst of all, invasive weeds are terribly hard to get rid of once the attack begins. However, one of the best solutions for keeping these intruders out of your garden is with landscape fabric. Landscape fabric will keep animals from digging up new plants and control erosion. Best of all, landscape fabric will stop creeping jenny or any of her other friends before they start. In the case a weed breaks through, it will be easily identifiable. In a sense, landscape fabric serves as an alarm system for your garden.
