While English IMing is dominated by usernames, in QQ what matters is your number. People can (and do) change their usernames all the time, so what you add you your “buddy list” is going to be their QQ number, not their name. People may also ask you for your QQ number (it’s listed right along the top of the QQ window in both the PC and Mac versions).
When you add someone to QQ, you may want to make a note of their real name (QQ will allow you to assign your own nickname to any friend when you add them, or at any point afterwards) and I highly suggest you do. Usernames and avatar pictures change all the time, and since you’re not likely to memorize all your friends’ 9-digit QQ numbers, you’ll want something to help you remember who is who if you’re planning to add a lot of friends.
